If your student is still learning to read, check out the “I Can Readathon” program sponsored by PBS KIDS and HarperCollins Children’s Books division for ideas about books and more.
The joint campaign is designed to get kids learning daily through activities that encourage them to develop a love of reading and explore the world of books. The focus is on the I Can Read! books for beginning readers at multiple levels.
HarperCollins is donating 8,000 books to the First Book program nationwide. First Book distributes free books to children in need through local programs and agencies, including Head Start programs, Title I elementary schools, United Way recipients, public libraries, and local housing authorities. The books will go to kids who are most in need of reading resources. First Book has distributed more than 130 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families in the United States and Canada.
The I Can Readathon program offers activities through spring 2016. More information, including book suggestions and free printable material such as activity booklets and reading journals, is available here.
