Austin neighbors who are facing hunger issues because of the COVID-19 pandemic are welcome at a pop-up food pantry each Saturday morning through the end of August at Third Unitarian Church.
The pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to noon every Saturday through Aug. 29. Third Unitarian Church, 301 N. Mayfield in Chicago, is running the pop-up pantry in collaboration with Praise Temple of the Restoration International congregation and the nonprofit group Thankful For Chicago. The pantry will be set up outdoors near the church and garden, two blocks east of Austin Boulevard and just south of the El tracks.
Some of the fresh produce available at the food pantry comes from the church’s Mayfield Community Garden. The first pop-up pantry on June 27 featured mustard greens from the garden.
The pantry also is looking for food donations and volunteers. The church is accepting donations of non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, and other household items from 9:30-11 a.m. Sundays, 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays, and 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays.
Monetary donations also are welcome, via this link. Those interested in volunteering at the pantry can fill out a form at this link. All volunteers must sign up in advance and follow social distancing safety precautions.
